7 Quick Takes: Volume 13
Recently I had some of my “Catholic routines” broken, and it has been really jarring. I used to go to a holy hour which was set up for students every week, but now it’s gone for the summer. Still looking for a new place for regular adoration and confession which fits my work schedule.
I went to a kickboxing class yesterday. Mostly went to support a co-worker who’s learning to teach it, but it was quite fun. It really did make me realize how unfit I am though. I was ready to fall over after the “warm-up”.
Yesterday I heard the most disappointing commentary on Gosnell ever. Listening to talk radio and they had an “ethicist” on to talk about what it means for the abortion debate. Well I guess this guy’s an expert. Let’s all band together and get more contraception out there, especially Plan B. *puke* But seriously, it made me wonder, what is an ethicist? It’s not like this guy was advocating any moral system, his only qualification seemed to be the ability to promote the “ethics” of our consumer culture to make the abortion industry more money.
I’m excited about getting a new book, The Rithmatist, by Brandon Sanderson, which just came out this week. Brandon is one of my favourite authors, and has been ever since I read Elantris, years ago. If you’re a fan of epic fantasy, check out some of his books. I’ve read and loved just about all of his works, and they’re all really well written, as well as being free of the random sex scenes that a lot of fantasy authors throw in.
My friend is an incredible singer. Maggie Wang, aka Mags, has just come out with her first album and is getting a lot of attention on Christian radio stations across North America. She’s currently raising money for a video for her single “Knock”. If you’d like to help out a promising young Catholic artist, you can support her indiegogo campaign.
I realized last night I need to be more quick to give thanks to God for the good things in my life. God is, in a way, revealing parts of himself in everything good that we experience, and I need to try to appreciate it better.
I recently was reminded of this old Youtube channel. It belongs to my local parish, St. Mary, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, and it is a hidden treasure trove. A good friend of mine does incredible Bible studies, and they’re available for free on this Youtube channel. Unfortunately no one knows about them so they’ve hardly gotten any views, which is just a heartbreaking waste of potential. I’ve learned an incredible amount from her Bible studies over the years, so if you’re ever looking for some online resources, I highly recommend it.
