The Great Sexual Persecution
The insurgence of the Sexual Revolution was a force to be reckoned with. It built up underneath the surface of the culture and exploded in the 60’s like a volcano with its destructive ash filling the atmosphere. In retrospect, one can see that the vast populace chose to breathe in deep the toxic fumes. The devastating side effects of this can be felt everywhere, and within the church it is no exception. The Church is dealing with people within the local Church who have drunk deep of the hedonistic ideologies of the revolution, and also those without. Long gone are the days of a revolution; the change has taken affect. It has become the sexual culture.
The Sexual Revolution is multi-faceted and its effects are very complex and so to discuss the entire movement would take a book. Due to the complexity of the issue, I only wish to attack a specific point that the sexual revolution pushed and where it has led. The hedonist attitude I wish to speak on is what I like to call the “Doctrine of Immediate Gratification”.
The Canadian rock band, Sloan, released a song in 2001 called “If it feels good, do it” wherein the chorus sang with almost an eerie joy,“If it feels good do it even if you shouldn’t. Don’t let people mess you around. If it feels good do it even if you shouldn’t. Nobody can mess you around”. This seems to be the battlecry of the hedonist culture worldwide. I believe that this attitude is the underlying license people use to do as they please.
This is the Doctrine of Immediate Gratification:
If you want something, get it. You want it hot and ready? Go to the microwave. Hungry? Go to the McDonalds down the street. Like a song, buy it, or download it illegally. Don’t have money to see Spiderman? No problem, somebody has to have brought their video camera and recorded the screen somewhere. If you feel sexually deprived, turn to porn and masturbation, that’s the normal thing to do. Things getting a little uncomfortable in your marriage? Divorce is only a couple grand away. Fidelity? Who needs that! Make your marriage an open marriage, that way you don’t get bored and you can still have fun and still be together – sort of. Pregnant? Not ready to be strapped down changing diapers? Why not terminate that little “parasite”. Don’t let anything stand in your way of the life you have planned for yourself whether that means in the short term or the long term. It’s all about you getting what you want now!
Somewhere along the line, the idea of “Live and let live” became “Live and let people do whatever they want as long as it does not affect my comfortability”. Does anyone not see the issue with this?
This attitude has permeated into everything. It has broken down marriages and families, it has turned people into porn-addicts, it has sought the redefinition of marriage and family itself. It breaks down obedience, it cuts off charity, and it brings an end to virtue. It short, I believe this attitude is causing the world to implode.
A key player in the sexual revolution is the same as the instigator in the Garden – yes, the cunning serpent. Now, don’t go getting your scapulars in a knot, I am not simply placing blame on the devil, however, I truly believe that he is a key player in pushing this movement forward. What does Jesus tell us about him? The enemy of our souls “kills, destroys, and steals”. He has put a bead on the family from the beginning. Why? Because it mirrors the Blessed Trinity and is the greatest force in the world. Therefore, he attempts to attack couples and break them apart. He seeks to weaken their trust, make each bored with the other through the seeking of immediate gratification, ie. porn or pre-marital sex, make the couple too busy to properly deal with relationship, and then makes divorce the easy out. Rinse and repeat.
And this is supposed to be appealing?
The current culture makes this type of thing look appealing, if not, simply the norm. The Catholic Church defends the truth that family and sexuality is worth so much more than that. She defends the truth that sexuality was meant to be between a man and a woman, exclusively in a sacramental, marital bond. She defends that life is to be protected and cherished, and that the fruit of marital love is the gift of life – another person; a child. The Church calls for men and women to recognize their worth and dignity. Christ offers the faithful through the Church the Sacrament of Baptism. We are then baptised into Christ’s role as priest, prophet, and king. Therefore, we hold a royal dignity. This is incredibly positive.
What does the world say about the Church and her view on human sexuality?
The Church is too restrictive.
The Church is too archaic.
The Church hates women.
The Church hates homosexuals.
The Catholic Church harbors rapists and child molesters.
Our body, our Choice.
That fetus is nothing but a clump of cells.
Catholics are stupid.
It’s the classic ball and cup trick. The world has tricked the vast majority of people into thinking that the solution to their problem is under the cup they have chosen, but there is nothing there but an empty cup. They make the Church to look like the villain, but it is really the world that is leading them down the path of self destruction. Over and over, especially through media, the world has been fed lies about the catholic church. The poorly catechized catholics and the rest of the world, slowly bought into these subtle falsehoods. The world has chosen to believe soundbytes over sound teaching. Instead of being able to get to the heart of the new evangelization and share the Gospel message, we end up trying to clear up the misunderstandings they’ve been fed through anti-catholic propaganda. And this is exactly how the world and the devil intends. Distract people as much as possible from the joy and peace that is found only in having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and with being in union with His one true Church.
If we are any sort of visible Catholic in the world, we are going to have to deal with these soundbytes over and over again with those we know who may not understand. On a macro scale, this soundbyte propaganda with its strawman attacks will be the backdrop for what I believe is the next great Christian persecution. Similar to the ball and cup trick, people will not necessarily attack Catholics for the heart of our faith, which is Jesus Christ, but will attack us for our stance on human sexuality. We will be blasted for our belief in the dignity of the human person and their sexuality in God’s plan. The theology of the body goes completely unseen. Though not a Catholic himself, the recent Chick Fil-A founder scandal is only another proof of this. People smeared Dan Kathy, founder of the fried chicken chain, as an anti-gay bigot based on his recent interview with Baptist Press. What kind of hatred spewed from his mouth to create this type of scandal?
“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.
“We operate as a family business … our restaurants are typically led by families; some are single. We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that,”
What a hate-filled person! How dare he wish to support the family and encourage traditional family values; values which statistically lead to healthier relationships and more balanced children. What kind of rational human being does he think he is?
Ummm… he is a rational human being.
What he said was very positive, but the tolerance card was pulled on him. Suddenly, the haters came out and began doing incredibly intolerant things to them, and blasted Chick Fil-A, accusing them of bigotry and the whole nine yards. Sad but true.
I believe that this our lot if we defend the family and true human sexuality. Expect persecution – but don’t expect it to be objective. Expect to be accused all types of false things. Our Lord promised this would happen. “Blessed are you who are persecuted…”. The key is to remain objective, charitable, and always promote the beauty found in living a pure lifestyle and most of all, in being united to Jesus Christ through the Sacraments of His Church and through prayer. Keep in mind what the Servant of God, Fulton J. Sheen said,
“There are not a hundred people in America who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions of people who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church — which is, of course, quite a different thing”.
