Our Blog’s Name and Canon 216
Some of you may have noticed that we have a new domain name linked to our blog: orthodoxcatholicism.com. You may also have noticed that the title of our blog recently changed to “Orthodox Catholicism”, and has now been changed back to “Team Orthodoxy.”
Recently we, the writers at Team Orthodoxy were made aware of Canon 216, through the writing of an awesome blogger and canon lawyer: http://canonlawblog.wordpress.com/
Here is what the canon states (from vatican.va):
Can. 216 Since they participate in the mission of the Church, all the Christian faithful have the right to promote or sustain apostolic action even by their own undertakings, according to their own state and condition. Nevertheless, no undertaking is to claim the name Catholic without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority.
The emphasis is ours. When we became aware of this canon, we realized our new name was claiming something we don’t want to. Effectively it was saying we are an official representative of orthodox Catholicism. We have no such official status currently. We are simply four laypeople with a private ministry and a call to practice and preach orthodox Catholicism – as all Catholics do.
Because of this, we’ve changed the name of our blog and facebook group back to “Team Orthodoxy,” out of respect for canon law. We apologize for any confusion this causes our readers.
Any questions or concerns can be brought to our attention through our email: firstname.lastname@example.org
May God bless you,
